The Doha International Book Fair 2024 will welcome the public from May 9 to May 18, 2024. The highly-anticipated book fair is an annual event hosted by Qatar’s Ministry of Culture. Its promising 33rd edition will host several readers, publishing houses, authors, and other entities from different countries.
History of Doha International Book Fair
The Doha International Book Fair is one of the oldest and largest international book fairs in the region and enjoys a good reputation due to the high demand from Arab, Gulf, and foreign countries participating in it. The first launch of the exhibition was held in 1972 under the supervision of the Dar Al Kutub Al Qatariya. It would be held every two years but since 2002 it has become an annual activity.
The Fair gained international acclaim after it successfully attracted the largest and most important publishing houses in the world. More than 20 publishing houses participated in the first exhibition and reached currently to 340 publishing houses representing 34 countries on an area of 29,000 square meters.
Since 2010, Doha International Book Fair has been selecting one of the countries as ‘Guest of Honour’ of the exhibition and so far the United States, Russia, Turkey, Iran, Japan, Brazil and Germany, France, Saudi Arabia have had the honour of becoming the guest of honour in the Fair. Sultanate of Oman will be the Guest of Honor for the year 2024.
What to expect at Doha International Book Fair
The obvious thing to do at the book fair is to explore and buy books and more. Furthermore, the book fair is set to offer more than that as visitors will explore local and international publishing houses, seminars, and workshops. Panel discussions are also expected to take place, connecting industry intellectuals and promoting the sharing of ideas.
Visitors will also find stalls from the embassies of different countries where you will find books and magazines on the country’s culture and tourism.
The book fair will also have activities and events for all age groups to cultivate the love for reading and inspire them to share knowledge.
The book fair also hosts cafes and restaurants for quick snacks and drinks.
