Building on the annual One Book, One Doha reading campaign, Qatar Reads, an initiative under Qatar National Library, is offering audiences a glimpse into literature and art with its Fables in Fashion exhibition. This year, local artists were invited to interpret the timeless themes of Ghassan Kanafani’s Men in the Sun — the campaign’s chosen book — through their art.
Currently on display at M7 Gallery 2 in Msheireb Downtown Doha from 8 to 14 September, the exhibition demonstrates how reading can ignite creativity in individuals. This innovative event showcases the enduring relevance of a book written 62 years ago, connecting its profound insights to our contemporary world.
“Fables in Fashion” encourages diverse interpretations of selected fables, translating their themes and narratives into visual art. It highlights how written words can influence and inspire fashion design. It also celebrates the profound connection between literature and visual creativity, fostering a vibrant cultural dialogue and deepening the community’s appreciation for both.
Commenting on the exhibition, Fatema Al-Malki, Project Manager at Qatar Reads, said: “The Fables in Fashion art exhibition blends the worlds of literature and art, offering a platform for local creatives to explore how storytelling and visual expression intersect. This annual event showcases the power literature to stimulate the creative economy while celebrating Arab cultural heritage.”
This year’s exhibition includes a special focus on the Palestinian cause, given that the chosen book for this year’s One Book, One Doha campaign is Men in the Sun. The novella explores the deep challenges faced by Palestinians, capturing their quest for hope through the experiences of three distinct generations. Showcasing more than 52 artworks by 30 artists, each piece offers a distinct perspective on the central theme, creating a seamless fusion of art and literary heritage. Wadha Al Athba is one of the artists who have created pieces that illuminate this literary masterpiece.
Wadha said: “I participated in Fables in Fashion to transform the novel Men in the Sun by author Ghassan Kanafani into art. It’s a sad story, but it reflects the painful reality faced by the Palestinians. The artwork consists of a painting that shows how Palestinians stand with pride, patience and faith, and that victory is near.”
This annual exhibition provides a platform for book lovers to channel their passion into fashion, showcasing how literature can inspire and influence artistic endeavors. Through this convergence of storytelling and design, the exhibition enhances community appreciation for literary and visual arts, offering fresh perspectives on beloved texts and celebrating the creative interplay between them.
The exhibition is open to the public, inviting book lovers and art enthusiasts to explore the fusion of ancient tales and modern artistry. “Fables in Fashion” offers visitors a journey through the creative landscape where literature and fashion meet, showcasing the enduring power of storytelling and the limitless creativity of local artists.
The exhibition can be seen at M7 Gallery 2 in Msheireb Downtown Doha until 14 September.
