Culture, art, and entertainment take centre stage in Qatar’s October calendar

Kickstarting the winter season, Qatar Calendar’s October Edition is set to offer a fun-filled month of entertainment, renowned exhibitions, and cultural experiences catering to all tastes and interests. As the weather cools, residents and visitors alike can immerse themselves in the country’s vibrant culture, sporting competitions, stunning art, and an array of activities available throughout the month.

Qatar Calendar, a comprehensive guide for navigating events across the country, has also recently undergone a revamp, boasting a fresh new look and feel. Its seamless design provides a centralised hub for event listings, complete with essential information such as event dates and details.

Commenting on the events, Sheikha Noor Abdulla Al-Thani, Head of Tourism Events and Festivals Organising Section at Qatar Tourism, said: “Our newly revamped Qatar Calendar reflects our ongoing commitment to creating the go-to source for everything happening across the country. Whether it’s action-packed sporting events, or immersive workshops, we aim to elevate the leisure experience for both residents and visitors. This October, we’re excited to offer a vibrant line-up, including enticing art exhibitions, the return of the biggest B2B trade fairs, and renowned entertainment.”

Theatre & Entertainment

Theatre enthusiasts can enjoy the Kuwaiti theatrical comedy, The First of Its Kind, running at Katara Cultural Village from October 2 – 9.  In addition, A Night of Mozart, conducted by Andreas Weiser, will offer a captivating evening of Mozart’s brilliance on  October 4  at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) , Auditorium 3. Tchaikovsky’s spectacular masterpiece ‘Swan Lake’ is taking place with the renowned Moscow Ballet La Classique ‘Swan Lake’ on October 18 at QNCC.

Exhibitions

“The Limits of My Language Are the Limits of My World,” exhibition is currently on display at the Media Majlis Museum at Northwestern University in Qatar until December 5, showcasing how everyday words and phrases have shaped our cultures. It delves into the theme of influence and its effects when it comes to the Arabic language.

“Art is About Art,” curated by Dirk Van Lierop and Alejandra Barillas in partnership with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, features five prominent artists from around the world as they explore how authentic art serves as a medium for connection and a bridge between cultures. This exhibition is taking place at the Fire Station Gallery from September 22 to November 2.

Additionally, the Fire Station is hosting two more exhibitions this month. “Eternal Echoes: The Silent Cry of Gaza,” running until November 2, is an exhibition by Hayat El Yamani, showcasing a series of sculptures that pay tribute to the voiceless children of Gaza. AIR 8: A House Overlooking the World,” running until December 31, explores the concept of home through the eyes of seven artists who participated in the Artist in Residence program at the Fire Station Gallery. Meanwhile, M7 will be hosting “Ellsworth Kelly at 100,” from October 31 to February 13, paying tribute to the late artist’s seven-decade-long career.

Three art workshops are taking place throughout the month at the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA). The Kufic Calligraphy (Advanced) workshop, running from October 5 – 26, offers a short course dedicated to further developing calligraphy skills. Beginners can join the Diwani Calligraphy (Beginners) workshop, which explores a style of calligraphy originating from the early Ottoman era, from October 15 – 29 at MIA. Additionally, the Linocut Printmaking Workshop will allow participants to engage in this linoleum printmaking technique from October 7 – 9.

For shopping enthusiasts, the International Shopping Exhibition will take place from September 27 to October 13 at Katara Cultural Village. Those interested in the fine craftsmanship of oud and perfumery can visit the West Walk Oud & Perfume Exhibition to explore a realm of exquisite fragrances, running from September 26 to October 5 at West Walk. Additionally, the unique women’s fashion event, Zinatha Exhibition, returns for its 3rd edition from October 31 to November 8 at Al Hazm Galleria. Qatar Chamber is also hosting the Arabian Women Exhibition, which will showcase innovative designs in fashion and accessories from October 5 to 10. This will be followed by the 6th edition of the Asjad Exhibition, showcasing exquisite jewellery, from October 24 to 29.

Trade Fairs & Conferences

The Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC) will be hosting several trade fairs simultaneously, covering various industries and sectors. Qatar’s most renowned real estate event, Cityscape Qatar 2024, returns for its 12th edition from October 13–15 at DECC. This year’s edition is expected to attract over 10,000 attendees and feature more than 90 developers, offering participants the opportunity to connect with top developers and explore their projects. Simultaneously, professionals can discover the latest innovations shaping the future of construction at Big 5 Construct Qatar, the largest event in the construction industry, also taking place from October 13–15 at DECC. Those with an eye for interior design can visit INDEX Design Qatar from October 13–15 for three days of impactful networking and collaboration with leading manufacturers and suppliers.

Towards the end of October, DECC will host Milipol Qatar 2024 from October 29–31. Held every two years, the event is the only global platform in the Middle East exclusively dedicated to homeland security and safety.

Doha International Family Institute is organising a global conference commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the International Year of the Family (IYF). The International Year of The Family Conference will take place from October 30 – 31 at the Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC). Qatar Sustainability Week, a widely successful national campaign is returning for 9th edition from September 28 – October 5, with various sustainability-oriented activities and initiatives aim at raising awareness.

Sports

Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just starting out, the 5K Dash on October 5 offers participants a scenic route through Lusail Boulevard. For those looking for more challenges, the second edition of the Al Wakrah Challenge Race 2024 takes place on October 26 at Wakrah Beach, with distances ranging from 800 metres to 10K.

Tennis enthusiasts can look forward to the 4th Qatar Asian Junior Tournament (14 Years & Under), organised by the Qatar Tennis, Squash and Badminton Federation at Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex from October 7 to 12. Meanwhile, an action-packed event awaits at Ali bin Hamad Al-Attiyah Arena, as the 4th Qatar International Taekwondo Championship (G1) takes place from October 26 to 29.

Padel lovers can enjoy the 17th edition of the FIP World Padel Championships, held at Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex from October 28 to November 2. Additionally, table tennis experts will compete for cash prizes at the WTT Youth Star Contender Doha 2024, happening from October 8 to 12 at Lusail Sports Arena.
