Qatar will host the West Asia Super League Final 8 for the 2023-2024 season from May 25 to June 1, 2024, the FIBA Regional Office for Asia has announced. This will be the first time that Doha, Qatar will be hosting the much-anticipated event, as the inaugural edition was hosted in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. “Watching Qatar host the Final 8 of the Wasl Championship fills me with extreme pride and excitement,” said Mr. Hagop Khagerian, Executive Director of the FIBA Regional Office – Asia. “This event not only highlights the exceptional growth and development of basketball in the region, but also underscores Doha’s commitment to excellence as a host city.”

He added: “Qatar’s dedication to promoting the growth of basketball is clear. It sets a precedent as we collectively seek to take the sport to new heights across Asia, especially in club competitions, which is one of FIBA’s strategic priorities for the 2023-2027 cycle.

Qatar will host the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2027.

Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) President Mohammed Saad Al Mughaiseeb, said: “Hosting the West Asia Super League Final 8 in Doha this year represents a milestone in Qatar’s basketball journey. It is not only about showcasing our prowess in the region, it is also about laying the foundation for the next stage.” The next big one.”

In recent years, Qatar has also hosted the FIBA U-16 Asian Cup respectively in 2022 and 2023. The Gulf state also hosted the FIBA Asia Cup, the region’s leading competition, in 2005.

QBF Secretary-General Saadoun Al Kuwari, said: “With the launch of the Final 8 in Doha, we proudly continue to build a tradition of being a basketball stronghold in the region starting from hosting the U-16 Asian Cup finals until the Asian Cup.

“This year’s Final 8 heralds another chapter in our Doha journey, as we continue to pave the way for unforgettable moments in basketball history.”

Six teams from the FIBA sub-regional leagues reached the Final 8. The champion Kuwait Club leads the Gulf delegation, which also includes Manama, in addition to the third-placed Kazma Club. Meanwhile, the squad includes West Asia Sports Club, Shahrdari Gurgan, and Hekma Sports Club.

The six will be joined by Kazakhstan’s Astana (Central Asia) and India’s Tamil Nadu (South Asia).

The final eight teams will be divided into two groups, each group containing four teams. After the group stage, the two highest-ranked teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals, while the third and fourth-placed teams will be eliminated. After that, the winners of the semi-finals will qualify to compete in the final.

The two finalists will earn a place in the inaugural BCL Asia Champions League which will be held from June 9-15, 2024 in Dubai, UAE.
